Life on the ocean wave

Over the centuries, the local economy of the Suðurnes region has been grounded in the fisheries. Fishing grounds are close by; early in the year, cod migrate into the shallows to spawn. The winter fishing season began on Candlemas, 2 February, and men from all over the country would migrate south for the season. After the season ended in May, many of the fishers returned to their homes to work on the land during the summer.
