Visit to the museum

We welcome guests and groups with the mission of providing good service and a unique experience.

Locations

The Harbor House

Duus Museum, Duusgata 2-8

The main exhibitions are located in The Harbor House.

The wharf building was built in 1877 as a warehouse for merchant Duus.  The house has a protected status and is largely original. Its main attraction is the pulley wheel in the attic, which was used to hoist goods to the upper floors of the building.

Open weekdays 10 AM-5 PM

Weekends 12 - 5 PM

Closed Mondays.

Stekkjarkot

on Njarðarbraut

Stekkjarkot is a reconstructed turf house, typical of the many cottages that characterized the area in the 19th century. The inhabitants of Stekkjarkot had to rely only on fishing for a living as farming was forbidden on the rented land.  Stekkjarkot was inhabited in 1857-1887 and then again in 1917-1923. The current building was built in 1993 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the town of Njarðvík.

Open by appointment only.

Innri-Njarðvík

Njarðvíkurbraut 42

In Innri-Njarðvík there is an opportunity to look back into the past and learn about the conditions of the inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century.

The same family lived on the large farm Innri-Njarðvík for 300 years. The family's history is intertwined with Njarðvíkur church, where the farmers were also churchkeepers. The house at Njarðvíkurbraut 42 was built in 1906 and the couple Jórunn Jónsdóttir and Helgi Ásbjörnsson lived there. When Jórunn died in 1974, the house and its contents were donated to the museum.

Open by appointment only.

Accessibility

We strive to ensure access to our exhibitions for everyone.

Free parking is available across the street from Duus Museum.  All exhibition halls are accessible by wheelchair. Please note, however, that as the Harbor House is old and largely fitted with original fixtures, the floor on the upper levels is slightly uneven. A lavatory for disabled persons is located on the ground floor of the Harbor House.

By Stekkjarkot and the museum's house in Innri-Njarðvík parking is provided close to the houses. Regrettably, the exhibitions in those two locations are not wheelchair accessible due to the nature of the building types.

Please contact the museum staff if you need more accessibility information.

We find it important that our exhibitions appeal to all age groups.

To make the visit even more exciting for children, we provide activities and worksheets during a visit.

In the vicinity

The exhibitions of the Reykjanesbær Heritage Museum are located in the main residential areas of the municipality.

The Harbor House is one of the oldest houses in town, located in the historical center of Keflavík.  The area is a hidden gem that is fun to walk around and full of charm.  Hafnargatu, not far from  Duus Museum, is the main shopping street where you can find local specialty shops and restaurants.

Innri-Njarðvík boasts great natural beauty and an unspoiled cultural landscape. There you can see the remains of the stone walls that surrounded the cottages, boat shelters, and the forgotten wells that were the only source of water, as the the porous lava allows no flowing of surface water.

The Reykjanes Peninsula has numerous interesting destinations and great natural beauty. Examples include the Blue Lagoon, Brimketill, Gunnuhver, Reykjanesviti lighthouse, and the Bridge Between Continents. The Reykjanes UNESCO Geopark has a visitor center in Duus Museum, the same location as the Reykjanesbær Heritage Museum's exhibitions.

Information on events, entertainment, restaurants, and much more can be found on Reykjanesbær's information website.
