Merchant Duus' Houses

Local history

You can find information about the local history along some hiking trails in the town.

The main focus is on photographs from the past together with a short informative text.

Merchant Duus' Houses

On the town green in Keflavík stand Duus hús, two buildings which originally housed the business of merchant Pétur Duus. The shop operated in Gamla búð (Old Store), built 1870. Opposite it stands Bryggjuhúsið (Pier House), a large warehouse built in 1879. These two structures remain standing today. The photo also shows the older shop building, which no longer exists. Merchant Duus ensured that the buildings were well maintained, having them treated each year with a mixture of tar and fish-oil. Thus the timber of the building remains in good condition today.
